The Sea, Air and Earth equipment of the United States Navy (Air and Land) or SEAL (acronym for Sea, Air and Land), commonly known as Navy SEALs, are the main special operations force of The United States Navy and are part of the Special Naval Warfare Command (NSWC) and are the maritime component of the United States Special Operations Command.
The unit's acronym (SEAL) refers to its capacity to operate on sea, air and land; but it is their ability to work underwater, which differentiates them from most other military units in the world. The experience gained from operating on battlefields in the ocean or in fresh water has shaped their identity and, as a result, they are considered to be one of the most highly qualified and amphibious amphibious units in the world. The Navy SEALs are trained and have been deployed in a wide variety of missions, including direct action and special reconnaissance operations, unconventional warfare, internal defense overseas, hostage rescue, counterterrorism and other missions. Without exception, all SEALs are male members of the United States Navy.
The first groups entered service in 1962, during the term of President John F. Kennedy.
The CIA's highly secretive Special Activities Division (SAD) and more specifically its Special Operations Group (SOG) recruits operators of the SEAL Teams. Joint operations between the SEALs and the CIA go back to the famed MACV-SOG of the Vietnam War. This cooperation continues to exist today and has been reflected in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in the finding and subsequent death of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan.
